KERTEH: Firefly’s newly-introduced route from Subang to Kerteh will help boost Terengganu’s economy.

“Oil-rich Kerteh is the top economic contributor to Terengganu and the connection will bring economic benefits to the state,” said Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said after Firefly’s new aircraft, the ATR72-500, arrived at Kerteh Airport last week.

“Local and foreign tourists travelling to Terengganu are expected to increase, and we look forward to exposing our tourist and leisure spots to lure more visitors to the state.

A total of 3.5 million tourists visited Terengganu last year. The figure is expected to rise to at least four million this year as the state is now more accessible with the introduction of direct flights from Subang to Kuala Terengganu and Kerteh by Firefly.

In the past, the journey to the two districts was cumbersome as travellers had to land at Kuantan Airport and then endure a two-hour drive on the highway.

“Investors in the state were previously turned away due to these factors,” said Ahmad.

Island-hopping activities will be introduced soon to capitalise on Terengganu’s beautiful islands and marine life.

Other projects such as a bird park, a mini zoo, an elephant sanctuary and a water theme park also hope to lure tourists.

Meanwhile, Firefly managing director Eddy Leong said the airline should not be seen as a low-cost carrier but as service-based, taking into account the trends and current situation in the country.

“Our objective is to provide convenient transportation that is economical to and from Kerteh,” he said.

Having served 16 routes domestically and internationally, Firefly continues with its daily low-fare offers. Domestic flights are as RM35, covering a 20kg check-in baggage allowance, assigned seating and in-flight refreshments.-The Star
